While the NHL faced criticism for how its first de-centralized draft was handled, Northeastern had success in seeing 2 recruits taken on Day 2 of the draft. This brings the total to 11 current or eventual future Northeastern players in the last 3 drafts. When factoring in players who transferred to Northeastern after being drafted, Northeastern has had players taken in every draft since 2013.
Sean Barnhill, 70th overall, New York Rangers- The third Northeastern player/recruit ever to be drafted by the New York Rangers, Barnhill heard his name called early in round 3. Barnhill opened eyes at the NHL Scouting Combine where he placed in the top 21 in 8 different combine physical assessments. The giant 6-foot-5 right-shot blueliner profiles are a shutdown defenseman who uses his size, reach, and physicality to kill rushes and be a terror to play against in his own zone. He moves well not just for his size but is a smooth skater overall, and he has the potential to add more offense to his game as he returns to junior hockey next season. He is projected to enroll to Northeastern in Fall 2026.
Nathan Quinn, 164th overall, Philadelphia Flyers- Quinn became the second Huskies recruit to be selected by Philadelphia (Hunter McDonald, 2022) when the Flyers snagged the right-shot center early in the sixth round. Quinn is a playmaking pivot who models his game after Nico Hischier of the New Jersey Devils, and excels on the defensive side of the puck. His vision, hockey sense, and reads make him a projectable forward for the pro level. One of the youngest players in the draft pool this year, Quinn is projected to enroll to Northeastern in 2026, however I would guess there is a possibility he may push until 2027 given his age and CHL ties.
