After adding defenseman Logan Cotter to the pipeline on August 1st, Northeastern doubled down on high-end, puck-moving defensemen from New England when Cam Minella committed to Northeastern on Thursday afternoon. Minella played last season as a rookie in the QMJHL with the Halifax Mooseheads.
Minella is a 5-foot-11, 175 pound left shot defenseman who hails from Darien, CT. He turned 17 August 29th, making him one of the older kids who turned eligible to commit to college on August 1. Last season, he made the jump from prep hockey to the QMJHL, playing in 64 games for Halifax and putting up 9 points (3 goals), and played in four playoff games. Prior to Halifax he played his freshman year at Brunswick School (CT prep), where he scored 37 points (7 goals) in 34 games and ran Brunswick’s powerplay. He is a product of the Mid-Fairfield Rangers youth organization.
He was a member of the silver medal-winning Team USA at the 2026 Hlinka-Gretzky Tournament, notching three assists in five games for Team USA. He also attended US National Team Evaluation camp, as well as USA Hockey Selects camp at the 15, 16, and 17U levels. He was a second round pick by both Halifax and Sioux City (USHL) in their respective entry and futures drafts, and was named Prep Rookie of the Year in 2024-25 by New England Hockey Journal. He is eligible for the 2027 NHL Draft.
Minella is “an elite offensive defenseman,” per New England Hockey Journal. Evan Marinofsky wrote just last month “Minella’s skating and brain help him elude pressure and make passes that even people watching from above didn’t see coming.” Marinofsky further lauds his ability to break the puck out, his vision, his ability to run a powerplay, and after Selects 17 Camp wrote “Minella has always been a puck wizard. But in my viewings of him at camp, he was even better at navigating the blue line, walking it well to improve shot angles and transporting pucks lower in the zone. His fleet feet allowed him to elude pressure and also step up to get to loose pucks or negate opposing rushes the other way.” And when he got his invitation to the Hlinka-Gretzky camp, Marinofsky added simply “the 5-foot-11 defender is one of the most dynamic, puck-moving defenders in the United States.”
Minella is rated a 4 star recruit by PuckPreps. They have also scouted him extensively throughout the last couple years, most recently in July at Selects 17 camp, where PuckPreps noted that he spent a lot of time paired with fellow Northeastern commit Brody Berard. In his camp evaluations, Kenny Kaminsky said “In the offensive zone, Minella thrives on deception, using fakes in every direction while constantly scanning the ice. This allows him to create more time and space for himself while opening up passing and shooting lanes for both himself and his teammates. He plays with a calm, controlled style across all three zones, and that composure makes him even more difficult to defend against. On breakouts, his puck retrievals were superb, and he has a unique ability to make difficult plays look simple while making the simple plays look effortless.” PuckPreps contributor Blae Kloeppel said back in September “He consistently showed poise and confidence in his own zone, helping his team break out cleanly and quickly turn defense into offense. One of the most impressive aspects of his game was his skating ability. His smooth strides and mobility allowed him to create separation from forecheckers, opening up space to make plays and find teammates in stride…He always had his head up, scanning the ice for options, and displayed excellent puck distribution skills in the offensive zone.” Kloeppel also previously has called Minella a “breakout machine.”
In the words of New England Hockey Journal, “everyone wants the next great puck-moving defenseman, and Minella has a chance to be that.” Landing his commitment is a major coup for Northeastern, as Minella has a chance to be the best puck-moving defenseman and offensive driver the Huskies have seen in a very long time, going back to the likes of All-Americans and NHLers Jordan Harris and Jeremy Davies. With Minella and Logan Cotter committed this August, the future of the blue line’s left side looked stacked with high-end local talent. Add in a defensive specimen like Brody Berard on the right side, and this might be the best stretch of defenseman recruits Jerry Keefe and his staff has landed in the last five years.
We project Minella to enroll in 2029 at present but given that he is an older commit for the current cycle, there remains a chance he enrolls in 2028 instead. Whenever he does enroll, we expect him to make an impact as soon as he dons the Northeastern uniform.
