Northeastern continues to have success recruiting in the Canadian Hockey League, landing the verbal commitment of Nathan Lecompte last week. Lecompte is an ’07 forward out of Châteauguay, Quebec and plays for the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the QMJHL.
Lecompte is a 5-foot-10, 165 pound right shot forward currently in his third year with Chicoutimi. He has been playing both center and wing during his career, and this year is centering their top line, jumping out early to 9 points in 8 games. A top pick of the 2023 QMJHL Entry Draft, last season he put up 49 points (14 goals) in 56 games, adding 5 points in 8 playoff games, after notching 33 points (15 goals) in 66 games as a QMJHL rookie in 2023-24. He was a member of Team Canada Red in the 2023 World U17 Hockey Championship, scoring 4 points in 7 games for Canada including an overtime winner against Finland. He was named to the 2025 QMJHL Top Prospects Game to take place October 21 in Sherbrooke, QC, a roster of players selected by a committee made up of the QMJHL Commissioner’s Office and NHL Central Scouting, indicating that Lecompte has an excellent chance to be drafted in 2026 with a strong season.
Rated as a 4-4.5 star prospect by Neutral Zone scouting and PuckPreps, Lecompte went undrafted in the 2025 NHL Draft largely due to a league-wide shift to drafting larger players in recent years. This did not stop the Utah Mammoth from bringing him to 2025 Development Camp as an undrafted free agent, or the New Jersey Devils from adding him to their 2025 Prospects Challenge roster as a UDFA. He ended the Prospects Challenge leading the Devils in scoring with 5 points (4 goals) in 3 games, being called “by far the most productive player on the ice for the Devils,” so much so that Devils Twitter was calling for the team to extend an AHL contract to him coming out of the Prospects Challenge.
Lecompte is a playmaker who drives the puck into high-danger areas, does well in transition, and has good defensive instincts. Neutral Zone calls him a “fantastic skater” with “amazing edge work and speed for days.” NZ states that he “processes the game extremely well,” and in their 2025 Draft evaluation of him lauded “elite-level quickness and lateral agility,” as well as a propensity to shoot the puck (4.7 shot attempts per game) and willingness to play between the dots despite his size. Devils observers at the Prospects Challenge noted his strong off-puck game, citing his ability to “[get] into prime scoring position without drawing attention from the opposition and constantly keeping on the move to keep the defense on their toes…He simply looks like he’s giving it his all out there every time he puts his skates on the ice.” And lastly, McKeen Hockey calls him a “tenacious” player despite his frame, stating “he works very hard along the board and is not afraid to fight in front of the net. He is relentless every shift, moving his feet a lot with intensity and energy. Even better, he is quick on his skates, using his speed to evade players while in the offensive rush or when crashing to the net.”
Lecompte projects as a playmaking center or wing at the college level, someone that we could see in the Huskies’ top six at his peak, and his speed, vision, and playmaking skills will likely see him be a focal point of Northeastern powerplays in the future. At this stage we would expect him to enroll in 2027 after exhausting his CHL eligibility, although a strong 2025-26 season in which he gets drafted could make a strong case for him to enroll in 2026.
Congratulations to Nathan on his commitment to Northeastern!
As always, go Huskies!
