We interrupt your lack of hockey during the summer to bring you some news on the recruiting trail- the Huskies have secured a verbal commitment from 2002-born forward Matt Choupani, out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Choupani posted his commitment on his Twitter and Instagram pages on Friday, August 10th.
Choupani is a right-shot forward and according to his Elite Prospects page stands 5-foot-9, and weighs in at 170 pounds. He is currently playing for the Lac St. Louis Lions in the QMAAA, a junior league in Quebec that produced current Huskies defenseman Jeremy Davies and Huskies recruit Jeremie Bucheler. Last season with the Lions, Choupani produced 28 points (17 goals) in 40 games, after scoring 43 points in 34 games the year prior at the bantam level.
Prior to his commitment to Northeastern, Choupani was selected in the ninth round, 162nd overall in the 2018 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft by the Blainville-Boisbriand Armarda. A draft pick that late tends to indicate that the league perceives him as more likely to go the NCAA route.
Choupani was also chosen to attend the Gatorade Excellence Challenge, a competition associated with the QMJHL where they competed in full-length games in front of scouts for Hockey Canada and the QMJHL.
We will add more information on Choupani as it becomes available in the wake of his commitment. Currently, he is slated to arrive at Northeastern in 2020-2021, per Hockey Commitments on Twitter. You can check out our entire pipeline project HERE.
Congratulations to Matt on his commitment! And as always, go Huskies!
