Make it two commitments in less than a week for the Huskies, as Northeastern secured the verbal commitment of Luke Posthumus, a forward out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Posthumus is a 6-foot, 180 pound, right-shot center currently playing for the Nepean Raiders program in the Central Canada Hockey League. He played for the Raiders U18 AAA program this past season, where he lit up the league to the tune of an absurd 81 points (38 goals) in just 32 games. He added 14 points in 8 playoff games after the regular season. For his work he was named the league’s MVP as well as the league’s leading scorer. He was able to play 6 games with the Raiders parent club in the CCHL, and scored his first CCHL goal in that time. Prior to the U18 level he also dominated the U15 level, leading that age group with 29 goals that season.
As one could tell from his stat line, Posthumus is an offensively gifted center. A late bloomer who “thinks the game at a high level”, he is starting to show his mettle and his skill, drawing rave reviews from observers at Raiders games. He’s a very good skater as well, with one scout saying he has “speed to burn with an electric release.” The same scout states he has “the vision and creativity to dish the puck as well.” He was selected in the 7th round of the OHL Draft by the Oshawa Generals, a pick range that usually is a coin flip between committing to Major Junior hockey in Canada and going the collegiate route in America. In fact, in researching him for this post, we learned that Oshawa thought enough of him to offer a contract, but Posthumus held out and now that he’s committed to Northeastern, it’s far more likely for him to follow through the college route rather than sign with Oshawa.
Posthumus has multiple options for his junior hockey, not only staying with Nepean in the CCHL, but he was selected by Muksegon in the 11th round of the USHL Draft Phase 2 just last week. At this point we can’t say where he is headed but we would hope that he gets some time in the USHL before enrolling so he can continue to hone his craft against the best competition possible. Muskegon has been developing incoming center Jack Williams for multiple years now, so there is a history between Northeastern and Muskegon.
Posthumus will reportedly spend at least two seasons developing in juniors before enrolling at Northeastern, with his potential enrollment coming in either Fall 2024 or Fall 2025.
Congrats to Luke on his commitment to the Northeastern. As always, go Huskies!
